About the topic

The Washington Post Company just launchedTrove.com, a news service that aggregates and personalizes news from 10,000 sources across the web, Wednesday. Vijay Ravindran, Chief Digital Officer of the Washington Post Company, answered your questions about the launching the new site and discussed why you're going to want to start using it right away. Ask your question now!
Q.

Vijay Ravindran :

Welcome to the chat. I am excited to talk to everyone about Trove!

Q.

Is trove.com connected only to Facebook?

I went to trove.com and I see I have to enter through my Facebook account. Is that the only way one can enter trover.com?

A.
Vijay Ravindran :

Trove currently uses Facebook Connect for registration. Since Trove is all about the user, it takes advantage of Facebook Connect to pull in your interests as outlined by your profile to help jump start the personalization. Facebook Connect also allows us to offer many more features that allow you to interact with your friends - we're excited to have some new site capabilities in the near future. We think having a social news experience is much more enriching.

We understand that there are concerns among some about using Facebook and encourage folks to check out our privacy pledge (written so normal people can read it): http://www.trove.com/privacy

Our plan is to roll out additional ways to login in the future, but we do not have a specific date yet. You can leave your email address to be contacted by going to Trove.com

Q.

Not available

Tough launch. Why is your server unavailable?
A.
Vijay Ravindran :

We unfortunately were caught up in the same Amazon cloud outage as Foursquare, Quora, and Reddit. Our servers are back up and fine now, so I hope you can go check it out.

Q.

wellllll

Seems like an interesting idea (I'm a huge news consumer and love WashPost and also google's news aggregator) but I don't have sound on my work computer, so can't really view and understand the celebrity video that's supposed to 'explain' it. I'm constantly frustrated by Washpost's videos that are useless to me :(
A.
Vijay Ravindran :

Thanks for the feedback. We also have a quick tour page here.

And we have real people ready to answer questions which you can ask on Twitter (#trove) or submit here.

Q.

apple tracking

How does Apple track its users?

A.
Vijay Ravindran :

I am not sure. Although I too am following the stories using Trove's iPhone channel: http://www.trove.com/channel/3782/iPhone

Q.

Sorry, I Expect Better

I'm sure you're very proud of Trove, but I'm an extremely experienced tech/media user/developer, who tests everything that comes to market and uses various newsreaders extensively, and I found the Trove user experience bewildering. The stuff it suggested for me makes no sense, and it wasn't real clear how to improve that experience. And more than anything, I suspect the Facebook requirement is a dealbreaker for a lot of people. It is for me. I spent a few minutes on Trove and don't expect I'll ever use it again. Fail.
A.
Vijay Ravindran :

Thanks for the feedback.

We use Facebook and public data available on Facebook to jumpstart relevant channels, and we’re constantly working on improving the system. We’ve made sure to make it easy for you to delete channels you don’t want, keep the ones that fit, and add new ones you want, all personalized for you.

The channel page for each channel you've added allows you to tune. Given your tech expertise, click on "fine tuning" and my guess is that you'll be able to rapidly improve the quality of your channels to your liking. I hope you give it another try.

Q.

Freedom of the Press

Would the Post consider dedicating a news stream to human rights issues in the US? There are two issues that should not be allowed to fall into a realm of public acceptance: 1. The treatment of Bradley Manning. 2. The militarization of public safety officials to include a recently disclosed device that transfers data from cell phones to a fusion center for analysis and profiling.
A.
Vijay Ravindran :

We're taking suggestions all the time. Just send them to http://trove.com/public/feedback

The editorial team at Trove is constantly creating new news channels, and would be happy to help. And in time, we hope you experiment with creating your own, as it can be very powerful. Once you create a user channel, you can make it public, they can be shared on Facebook, and with friends on Trove.

Thanks for trying it out!

Q.

Conversations

Obviously there isn't a ton of activity yet with Trove just being launched, but once it starts to pick up what kind of conversations would you like to see? And will moderators be sparking discussion or simply removing spam and trolls? It looks really great, so thanks for a new toy to tool around with!

A.
Vijay Ravindran :

We think that having conversation anchored to articles like they are on news sites today is insufficient, and that as Trove users add specific channels, that they'd actually enjoy in many cases conversing with others with the same interests. So we're excited to see how people use it. I think it will vary channel to channel. We do plan to moderate and keep trolls and spammers out.

Thanks for checking it out!

Q.

One opinion

If this helps any, in case there are debates ongoing about this, I do not mind the ads. I would rather see ads with free content than pay for access to news on the Internet. The Internet is so broad with so much to choose from, I am not going to waste time, effort, and money paying to read news on the Internet.
A.
Vijay Ravindran :

Thanks for the feedback. We're excited that Ford thought enough of our effort to sponsor it.

We think there is a place for free and paid sites and that consumers will help drive where this goes. Trove is important to the Post as not only a site for consumers, but as a sandbox for new revenue products as digital news evolves.

And I agree with your other point, there is so much good content out there, the challenge is discovery, and we think Trove can help.

Q.

Problem with Facebook

Where I work blocks Facebook, so I would have no ability to link to trove.com while keeping alert to news from this site at work.
A.
Vijay Ravindran :

Thanks for the feedback. We plan to have other means to log onto Trove in the future. And we have a form to be contacted on the landing page (trove.com).

Because of how Facebook Connect works, if you are able to log in once from a computer (say while it is at home) to Trove, being blocked from Facebook later won't stop you from using Trove. But I realize there are many who use secure machines that can never leave the office, and for you, we'll have a solution later this year.

Q.

Link stripping

What's the deal with trove stripping links from the peices it aggregates? DCist has been talking about the site, and its reviews so far are less than glowing, for more than just that reason.
A.
Vijay Ravindran :

For most of the content you experience on Trove, you are going out to a destination site ala Google News, so no link stripping there.

We had a bug in how we were processing feed content from our Washington Post Company internal sources which we are licensed to host on Trove.com. We're fixing it.

We take all feedback seriously, and have been pleased with the response across the publications that have covered us and happy that DCist caught that bug.

Q.

Video

So what is the deal with the Japanese-language video? It is hard to read the subtitles while following the screen. I don't get it.
A.
Vijay Ravindran :

It is actually Chinese (or Mandarin to be more precise). The video was produced by Next Media Animations, the same house that produces the news animation videos for Apple Daily, and became famous for their Tiger Woods animations after the SUV crash. They wanted to help, and built us the intro video. If you head over to YouTube, you can see more of their work.

Q.

login

When will it be Facebook optional?
A.
Vijay Ravindran :

We don't have a date yet, but it will happen sometime later this year. We have form where you can leave your email address and we'll contact you once that is available.

Q.

Trove.com and Facebook

Hi, I have a question regarding your Facebook Relationship.  It seems that in some news reports Facebook is reported to use personal data and membership trends and interest from its user and profit from this exclusive insight. What are your concerns about this practice? To me it's a clear shut case of profits over the constitution.

A.
Vijay Ravindran :

Trove uses Facebook Connect. And we discuss our policy in a way that any non-lawyer can read here: http://trove.com/privacy

We also link to Facebook's policy from there so you can be fully informed. We think our innovative use of Facebook is a service to readers, and so we're excited to continue to evolve Trove to be more social over time.

Q.

Privacy

While I would like to subscribe I will not share my personal information as the cost. Why should I?
A.
Vijay Ravindran :

Thanks for the question.

We take our users privacy seriously. And we're very clear about what information we request from Facebook and about getting permission from you. Once we have that permission, we put it to use to give you a better reading experience than if you were on a non-personalized site. That's our product and we think there are lots of readers out there who have many interests across sports, TV, politics, who are not able to keep up with news that would be of interest to them. We hope you check Trove out.

Q.

Off topic, but

Not about Trove, but since you're online now, I thought I'd point this out: I tried to view the slideshow of the work of the two recently slain photojournalists. It's great that the Post made this gallery available. However, after viewing the first two photos that had a lose-the-belly-fat ad obstructing the photos, I clicked out. I understand the need for ads, but really . . . I'll find the same gallery somewhere else.
A.
Vijay Ravindran :

Thanks for letting me know. That's definitely not the user experience we want. So I'll pass it on the right folks over here to look at it. Thanks again....

Q.

Why do I need Trove.com

As a DOD civilian I have the Earlybird, which is far superior to Trove.com by a wide margin.

A.
Vijay Ravindran :

We think Trove offers powerful personalization of news that is very easy to use.

It is available on many platforms already as apps (iPhone, Android, Blackberry) with iPad and Windows Mobile coming soon.

Once a reader has a few channels, especially off the beaten path, they find Trove to discover content they didn't know existed, published from credible writers that they didn't know before

I hope you check it out!
