First Wizard/Capital in history?
Good morning, all! Let's get going...
– December 13, 2012 10:59 AM
I liked your column on Friday, 12/7, about the Capitals and ending the NHL lockout (which, as I write this question, is still on). BUT you used the tired old cliche about hockey being a "niche sport." I find that annoying and, as a Caps season ticket holder, somewhat offensive. It's as if hockey fans are on some lunatic fringe that no one needs to pay attention to. Mostly, I find that the phrase is used by mainstream media types (who, largely, don't know the sport and don't care to learn) as an excuse not to cover hockey. Hockey is not a "niche sport" in this town any longer, if it ever was. The Caps have sold out something like 150 straight games and garnered the second highest cable ratings of any of the local teams for years until the Nats recent rise. And Ovi was the # 1 star in town until Harper, Stras and RG3 came along. That's no "niche." All of this is a long winded way of asking you to defend your characterization of the Caps and hockey as "niche."
–
December 07, 2012 2:15 PM
Tracee Hamilton :
The Caps aren't niche in Washington, but hockey is not a sport that is widely followed and understood in this country the way football, basketball and baseball is. It just isn't. And that's what I was discussing; the possibility of a season without the NFL is going to be more upsetting, AROUND THE ENTIRE COUNTRY, than a season without hockey. And if you don't believe that, I would be surprised. That doesn't translate as lunatic fringe; it means hockey's popularity is not as widespread as other sports. That in part is becauase there are parts of the country where hockey is simply not played. That's not the fault of hockey, necessarily, and certainly not hockey fans. But it's the truth.
Honestly, equating "niche sport" with "lunatic fringe" is apples and anvils.
I would also say that "main stream media" is just a cliched as niche sport, or perhaps moreso. Write a column decrying the lack of hockey, get accused of being anti-hockey, or not knowing anything about hockey, etc. etc. Kind of funny. Or not.

What was with the Heisman this year? Did everyone forget that Manziel had two bad games early in the season? Also, giving an award which has few criteria (one of which includes integrity) to someone with an albeit minor but very recent arrest record seems wrong. Manti was a great story and he played great. If he could not win this year, a defensive player just cannot win it, so why bother to pretend they can? T'eo should have won, but I thought even Klein was more deserving -- he only had 1 bad game and does not have a record.
–
December 11, 2012 8:49 AM
Tracee Hamilton :
I think an argument could be made for splitting the Heisman into two awards, one for offensive players and one for defensive players. I'm not sure a defensive player can win this award so why pretend it's for the best player in college football? As for Manziel, like most things, the voting is more of a "What have you done for me lately?" Klein needed to go unbeaten to win it and even then it might have been tough. Not believe he wasn't worthy, but it's tough to get votes out there on the Plains.

I just don't understand why the team and coach are insisting that all the Cowboys support him. Drive drunk and kill a teammate --- that's OK!! Come on in and work out. The Steelers had a lineman charged with drunk driving this year -- he was suspended immediately and then released after the preliminary hearing found enough evidence to proceed to trial. What a terrible message the Cowboys are sending about drunk driving.

Hi. Concerning Maryland's move to the Big 10. I understand (to a degree) why Maryland is moving if it means more money, but I am wondering why the Big 10 wants Maryland. I wouldn't think it would be for the football team (terrible for years) or the basketball team (mediocre for years). Is it that the Big 10 wants a foothold in the DC media market? I am trying to see what the benefit is from the Big 10's perspective.

I've been fairly vocal here pointing to paralells between the Nats of several years ago and the current Wizards. In light of the recent news about the abortive Harden deal, I'm sorry to say it's Jim Bowden and the '08 club. I think this is the final straw - Grunfeld has just got to go.

You know, after the Chiefs then went out and won that game, I had the absurdly cynical thought that now other teams are going to kill someone off right before a game, for the inspirational value. I never figured that to be anything more than darkly inappropriate comedy. Sure enough though, this next week, one Dallas Cowboy allegedly killed another on Saturday in a DUI, and the next day the team rallied to pull out a difficult win.

Defensive backs have won before, fairly recently. Also, there already is a defensive player award, and there's more to winning the Heisman than attending the school with the largest fake-alumni base in the country. By numerous accounts, Manti wasn't even the best defensive player this year.

After the latest celebrity wrecks a car, we always ask why they don't simply hire a car for evenings out. Wow, some people really need to turn their sensitivity meter down a little. Let's take a completely non-scientific example to illustrate the point. Today I posted the video of the Racing Presidents doing The Nutcracker because I'm dying for baseball to start back up. In the last couple of weeks, myself a many friends on Facebook have posted stuff about baseball trades and the winter meetings (including people in the great white north {hockey land}). Not a single person in my FB community has mentioned the hockey lockout. Not a single person around my office has mentioned it within earshot of me (2000 employees and constant chatter about Nats and Redskins). I like hockey, it's a fun game to watch; but I don't think I, or anyone else really, could care less that there aren't games going right now. I don't say that to be insulting to hockey, but let's be honest here, it is not a very big part of our national (or even DC metro area) dialog.

Tracee Hamilton :
Wait -- video of the Racing Presidents doing the Nutcracker? Got a link?
I have never understood why it is so important that everyone like what you like. Soccer people want all people to like soccer. Hockey people want all people to like soccer. I can't remember ever telling anyone "you have to like football because I do!" Or "you have to read this book". I would recommend a book but not be torn apart if my friend said, "eh, no thanks."
And this is from someone who misses hockey and wants it back, and who 30 years ago had never seen a game. I do think the Caps have a very loyal following in this town. But it's an in or out thing. My dad will go to his grave having never seen a hockey game and I wouldn't waste 2 minutes of my time trying to convince him otherwise, because I respect his ability to make that decision for himself.
– December 13, 2012 11:39 AM
'I do not like the proposal because it eliminates onside kicks, which as exciting."
But if I read it right, the scoring team gets the ball on their 35 yard line and it's 4th and 10. If they convert, the get the ball (like it's a recovered onsides kick). If they try and don't convert, the other team gets the ball (like it's a failed onsides kick). Or they punt (like a kickoff but with a risk of error). I like the idea.
–
December 13, 2012 11:25 AM
Tracee Hamilton :
Yes, it's like an onside kick but it's not an onside kick. you just hand the ball to the official and jog off. There isn't an actual KICK that has to bounce 10 yards before it can be touched. I like that.

– December 13, 2012 11:41 AM
Not really -- there isn't that much difference between 4th & 15 at your 30 and an onside kick from your 30. Either way, if you don't succeed, the other team gets the ball in great shape.

For years, Peter Angelos seemed to do everything in his power to wreck the good work of his management people. For all the credit he deserves for the Caps of recent years, it seems that Ted is throwing it all away on the lockout and decisions like the Harden one.
–
December 13, 2012 11:19 AM
Tracee Hamilton :
Well, let's hope that's not true. My editor and I were discussing this topic this morning. He points out that the new owners come in with some much more debt than owners had to assume even in Angelos's day and certainly before, that they approach the game differently. Not a lot of guys inheriting their football teams. And fewer guys with local ties, who see the team as not just a business but an extension of their communities. That would be a Lamar Hunt, for instance, or an Abe Pollin, who made his money here and cared about the area.

I tore a quadricep just before the conference change was announced, so this is the first time I've been able to discuss this with you. I understand the dislike of the move from casual Terrapin fans -- especially those whose interest is limited to men's basketball -- but many of us with close ties to the university have suggested something like this ever since the Big Ten announced it was seeking a 12th member. The benefits from both an athletic and academic perspective are considerable, and it's good for College Park to be aligned with its peer land-grant flagships such as Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio State. Incidentally, the Diamondback has been running a poll on student reaction to the move, and while initially reaction was split, in recent days, it now runs 53 to 34 percent in favor of the move. Thank you, Dr. Loh.

People seem to say that Luck should get it because he took the Colts from 2-12 to a playoff team but I think you have to take a longer view than 1 season. The colts had a culture and history of winning. The Redskins did not. Looking over the last decade you could kind of view the 2011 Colts season as a blip, and 2012 a return to form. The same look at the redskins history shows a near total sea change in the organization.

I totally agree with you using the phrase "niche sport" in regards to hockey. Hockey tends to have very devoted fans but less general appeal outside of the diehards. The diehards will support ANYTHING the team does, witness the sellouts here, but once you get outside that group the level of caring is "meh." Can you imagine if the NFL was close to canceling its second entire season in 8 years like the NHL is now? The television ratings bear that out.

First of all I don't believe that BS about intentionally not trying for touchbacks. Do you think his issues are because he didn't kick off at all in college (his team had another guy for that), or are they more inherent in his abilities?
–
December 13, 2012 11:45 AM
Tracee Hamilton :
You would think a guy who can boot 50-yarders on a nap has a strong enough leg to kick a ball off the tee a lot further than that, but perhaps not.
It will be interesting to see how positions change if the new rules go in. I would want an expanded roster, because you'd be carrying a kicker for nothing but field goals and a kick returner for almost nothing but punt returns.
– December 13, 2012 12:01 PM
My European friends already mock American football for having so little kicking in it. This would just give them more ammunition to use against me. Eventually there won't be any "foot" left in American football whatsoever.

For the OP who said nobody at their work is talking about the lockout, I think it depends on where you work (and if people know you like hockey). The lockout has gotten a lot of die hard hockey fans depressed and talking about it only makes it worse. I'm sure once (if) they play again you'll hear people talking about it again. I bet nobody was talking about the NBA lockout either.
–
December 13, 2012 11:47 AM
Tracee Hamilton :
If the NBA lockout had eaten 43% of the season, you'd have heard a lot of talk. But it's true, some places I'm sure there are Caps fans who are commiserating with each other. I think the poster was giving an example from his/her experience, not declaring that it was that way all across the land.
– December 13, 2012 12:02 PM
actually, it's just assumed that as an American you love the NFL and major college sports. I've had people ask me what's wrong with me when I say I don't care for the NFL or NCAA major sports. Oh lord, the grief I get. So, yes, I give people a hard time when they refuse to even give the slightest consideration to hockey/soccer/nordic combined/whatever other sport they're disparaging but have never watched. I've at least watched the NFL--and find that watching 20 minutes total of play spread over 3+ hours, nearly all of it seemingly devoted to giving another person a brain injury isn't something I enjoy.
–
December 13, 2012 11:49 AM
Tracee Hamilton :
It's always a good idea, when met with intolerance, to answer with intolerance. That always solves the situation.
I don't think it's assumed that all Americans like football and college sports. In fact, I never assume people even follow sports. I'll meet someone and if they can pry out of me what I do (and yes, I don't volunteer it) they will sometimes apologize for not reading me because they don't like sports. Good gravy, I don't expect them to! I'm a live and let live gal. In fact, I enjoy meeting people who want to talk about something other than sports. Nice change of pace.
I have been working in this biz for 30 years and I've never once said to someone, "how can you not like sports?" (or a specific sport, or anything else, for that matter). I don't understand out intolerance of anyone who holds different opinions than ours. Who cares?
I do think that giving people a hard time for something that so infuriates you is sort of self-defeating, though.

My trivia team, Twigs & Berries, is going for the Showtime Trivia championship on Saturday. One of my teammates, incidentally, is a BIG hockey fan who owns about a dozen jerseys from different teams and wears them to trivia Monday nights. He misses it badly!

Tracee: People are chastising Ted unfairly. Harden was a TRADE, not a draft choice like RGIII, Strasburg, Harper, Morris, and Ovie. The Skins tried trades for proven Veterans and what did it get them? So did the O's, and the Zards have done this several times. Ted was wise to save his powder for a bigger bomb later. Unless all you want is to watch basketball vice winning, then the trade makes sense. But to win, long-term, Ted needs to develop talent through the draft, a la Wall. DM

DM: The draft is important, but so far, how's that working out? The difference in the players you cite is simple: baseball and football have HUGE drafts, and baseball has a farm system. The NBA ... doesn't. Building solely through the draft is almost impossible. Sure, the Wizards have made some bad deals. Getting James Harden, IMO, would not have made that list.

We won't be getting together until 2013 (that is if the Mayans were wrong). I've really appreciated the insights, humor, cold-cut sourcing, beer reviews and everything else that makes this chat feel like home.
To Tracee, our hostess -- Thanks so much!
To my fellow contributors, Happy Hannukah, Happy Festivus, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy New Year. Pick all that are appropriate and enjoy.
See You next year,

Thanks, 405! I wish you all a happy holiday season and I'll be looking forward to Jan. 3 -- hopefully we can discuss the end of the lockout, among other things!
