Nickelodeon brings back the 90's: Doug, All That and more

Jul 25, 2011

Did you grow up watching Nickelodeon shows like "Doug," "Are You Afraid of the Dark?," "All That," "The Adventures of Pete & Pete," "Salute Your Shorts" and the like? Do you often think Nickelodeon should still be replaying those episodes? If so, then you're in luck. Nickelodeon is bringing back a block to TeenNick on Monday, appropriately called "90's Are All That," which will include all old favorite shows.

Keith Dawkins, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Nicktoons and TeenNick, chatted about the decision to bring back these classic shows and what to expect from this epic revival.

Hello.  This is Keith..SVP/GM of Nicktoons and TeenNick.  Thank you all for your question and enthusiasm surrounding the 90s ARE All THAT

What can we expect?

Tune in tonight at midnight eastern.  We'll be bringing you the shows that you loved from the 90s (e.g. All That, Kenan and Kel, Clarissa and Doug) packaged in a whole new way.  Plus...we'll have a great user experience on facebook, twitter and at 90sareallthat.com.  Check it out every night.

Dear Mr. Dawkins, I am very excited for all my childhood shows to start airing, thank you! However, I was wondering if you ever thought about changing the time slot? I dare say the individuals who would truly appreciate the programming are adults who have working schedules - those who can't stay up so late to watch it as they have to get up early the next morning! Any thoughts to pushing the time earlier so we can enjoy it??

Go online to watch episode from the 90s when you want and how you want.  Also...voice your opinion on facebook, twitter and at 90sareallthat.com.  We want to hear from you.

Why is Kablam not on the official list? I'm sure we're all dying to see some Prometheus and Bob!

I do love Prometheus and Bob myself.  Great minds! :)

I want to hear your thought on the lineup.  Go to Facebook, Twitter and 90sareallthat.com and let us know what you think.

There have been thousands of groups on Facebook, etc. that have been asking for this block for over five years. What finally convinced you to bring this block to all of us? Did the grassroot fan devotion play a part, or is it something that would have happend eventually, anyway?

We've always thought that these classic Nick shows still had value to an audience...but the ground swell of fans giving voice this on places like Facebook and Twitter really moved mountains.  To hear millions of people saying that they want the Nickelodeon of their childhood back is a powerful statement.  It's one that we just had to react to.

I think you should add My Brother and Me.

Go to 90sareallthat.com, Facebook and Twitter and let us know what you think about the lineup or anything else related to the block.

Make sure to watch every night at midnight (eastern).

Thanks for taking our questions Keith! As of now, next week's programming lineup is a mystery even though most networks have total scheduling filled in two weeks in advance. Will you be allowing fans to directly choose the programs that air in the 90s block, possibly via an online vote or a text messaging process, or will it be at the liberty of the programming execs?

Right now the line will consist of All That, Kenan and Kel, Clarissa and Doug.  Later in the year will be introducing voting concepts online that will allow the viewers to impact the lineup of show.  We definately want to hear from you...the fans.  The audience brought this idea to life by letting us know that they wanted their 90s Nick back.  We want to continue the dialogue with the audience.  Go to Facebook , Twitter and 90sareallthat.com.

I was disappointed to see that the channel these shows will be airing does not come with my cable package. Is there any way I can watch them online? Also, what about shows like Hey Dude and Fifteen? Any plans to bring them back? The young Ryan Reynolds was one of my first crushes!

Go to 90sareallthat.com, Facebook and Twitter.  The site will allow you to fully enjoy the experience.

What is the schedule/plans for the block? Are we only going to get this block for 6-8 weeks, and then never have it again? What will it take to keep this on the air for awhile? Certain number of viewers or feedback?

Millions of fans asked for this block, so we're bringing it back for them.  I hope to have this on for a very, very long time to come.  Ultimately....YOU the fans will decide.  Spread the word and tell everyone to show up Monday-Friday at midnight (eastern) on TeenNick.  Tell us what you think at 90sareallthat.com, Facebook and Twitter

There are many youtube videos and facebook pages devoted to the awesome commercials that used to air in the 90's. Is there any way to package those into a show, maybe a short like 5-10 min. in-between show? You could add disclaimers (like they do when they re-air "live" shows), and then have a host for the different commercials. Similar to what they used to do with SNICK and the big orange couch - they would have a "host" introducing each show, but this way you could have some old commercials, too.

Definately show up at midnight (eastern) tonight.

Lot's of the package that existed in the 90s is being re-used in exciting fresh ways.

Will you just be rebroadcasting the old episodes, or will you also provide new content like finding out what cast members of the different shows are up to now and the like?

Good idea.  We'll get working on this.

Keep the ideas rolling in.  Go to 90sareallthat.com, Facebook and Twitter.  This is exactly the kind of stuff that we want to hear from the audience.

Did you consider bringing back Roundhouse? What made you decide not to include it in the revival?

The audience seemed to be asking for All That, Kenan and Kel, Clarissa and Doug....but we are hearing lots of thoughts about other series (e.g. Double Dare, Rugrats, Hey Dude).

There are just so many shows that the audience is passionate about.  Later in the year we're going to allow the audience to have greater influence over the lineup via voting online.

Go to 90sareallthat.com, Facebook and Twitter for more information and to have your voice heard.

I want you all to know that having a dialogue with the audience is a crucial part of this idea.  It was the audience that demanded that we bring back the Nickelodeon of their youth.  We think it's important that we find ways for fans to watch the shows when and how they want, vote on what shows we should be airing, post comments on Twitter and Facebook, we even want to get those comments on the air.

Go to 90sareallthat.com, Facebook and Twitter.

We really want you to help us shape this story and drive the conversation.

Will the old nickelodeon bumpers be shown?

Yes.

It has been said that The 90's Are All That was supposed to been on weekend afternoons. Is this true?

Do you think that would be a good idea?

Right now we're focused on Monday-Friday at Midnight (eastern).  Let us know what you think about the schedule and the timing on Facebook, Twitter and at 90sareallthat.com

There are a few questions coming in about whether or note we'd remake any of these shows.   Right now the plan is to bring back the shows from the 90s.  This is what the fans have asked for.  The Nickelodeon content of the past seems to be where there is currently the most excitement.  But I do think it's important that we find new ways to make the content/idea feel fresh.  This is why we asked Kenan Thompson to help us out with the promotional work.  He helps bring a fresh, contemporary take to the idea.  Also go to 90sareallthat.com and see DJ Steve Porter piece that we did for the 90s.  I think fans will enjoy it.

I grew up loving a lot of the shows that are planned to be aired, but why didn't Hey Dude make the cut?

Later this year we plan to allow fans to vote and have an impact on the lineup of shows.  Keep checking in at 90sareallthat.com, Facebook and Twitter.  I've been hearing lots of requests for Hey Dude...so who knows.  You will see this show represented in the packaging for the block.

how often will each show be played?

The block will air Monday-Friday (Midnight-2am eastern).

It will immediately repeat from 2am-4am.

Thank you so much for bringing these shows back! Are the Facebook and Twitter pages monitored by actual Nickelodeon representatives so that we can be sure our feedback is being acknowledged?

ABSOLUTELY!  We brought this block back because 15 million fans were speaking out on various social media platforms.  We're definitely monitoring.  We even plan to bring your voices to the air in our packaging.  Make sure that you go to Facebook, Twitter or 90sareallthat.com

What is your favorite show you're looking forward to bringing back?

Way too many shows to choose from and I really don't want to show my personal bias.  What's yours?

Signing off now.  Thank you all for your questions.

Remember to watch the 90s ARE ALL THAT weeknights Monday-Friday (midnight-2am eastern).  Also...we want to hear from you on Facebook, Twitter and at 90sareallthat.com.

Let us know what you think! You brought the idea back and it's important that we continue to have a dialogue with the audience.

Thanks
