The TV Column Live -- Emmy Awards Preview

About the hosts

About the host

Lisa de Moraes

Pulitzer Prize winner, Peabody recipient, Medal of Freedom honoree -- Lisa de Moraes is none of these, but she is an authority on the bad direction, over-acting, and muddled plot lines being played out in the TV industry's executive suites. de Moraes worked for a decade as the television editor at The Hollywood Reporter, the entertainment industry trade paper, where she was routinely on the receiving end of more shouting phone calls from TV suits than Paula Abdul's manager.

When she upgraded to The Washington Post in 1998, a well-known executive producer called to suggest she have someone else start her car, but her trenchant writing (and refusal to use words like "trenchant") earned her the following praise from the brilliant, handsome media observer at Slate: "She writes like a wicked bitch." Wikipedia has called her "a noted television columnist," but they're often unreliable. It's pronounced "deh more ICE."

Q.

Emmy winners and losers

Hi Lisa -- Thanks for taking questions today. Which Emmy win Sunday night would make you most happy, and which would be most disappointing? For me, most happy: Lea Michele (sorry, can't help it); most disappointing: Tony Shalhoub (nice guy, good actor, but come on, enough already).
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

That's a tough question because I am hoping for a seismic change on Sunday. Yes, "Mad Men" is a very good show, but enough already. Ditto "30 Rock," etc. etc....I want to see lots and lots of change, like "Modern Family" taking best comedy,  and Julianna Margulies tearing Emmy for best drama actress away from the clutches of Glenn Close, and "Glee's" Lea Michele  winning best comedy actress, and "Big Bang Theory's" Jim Parsons for best comedy actor, but mostly I want to see Eric Stonestreet get the Emmy for best supporting actor in a comedy for "Modern Family."

Q.

Jimmy Fallon

So, are you just not a fan, or was he that bad in the interviews?

A.
Lisa de Moraes :

I am a big fan, but I have to report it as I see it. You know how bad Fallon is at doing interviews on his show (the other parts of his show are terrific but he's a nervous interviewer -- really really nervous when he debuted. Well, he's even worse when he's being interviewed about the Emmys -- it was nearly as bad as that time he interviewed Robert DeNiro.

Q.

What to watch this fall?

So my summer shows ("True Blood," "Top Chef" and "Project Runway") will be over soon. I've lost "Lost," can't watch "Two and a Half Men" anymore (it crossed too far from "can't believe I'm laughing at it" to "I can't in good conscience laugh at that") and need to fill some holes in my tv watching schedule. I'm looking forward to the return of "The Good Wife," "Modern Family" and "Glee" and will continue to watch "How I Met Your Mother" with the belief it has to be better this year, but what else? I'm thinking "Boardwalk Empire" (HBO is pretty reliable, "Entourage" notwithstanding), but haven't heard much about other shows that might be worthy of my time.

A.
Lisa de Moraes :

The "Boardwalk Empire" pilot is terrific -- and Buscemi is always worth watching. I can't believe I'm saying this but "The Defenders" on CBS is one of the big surprises and yes, it stars Jim Belushi and you know I'm no Belushi fan. But he's perfectly cast as a semi-skeevy Vegas lawyer and it is the Practically Perfect CBS show. I also like ABC's new Wednesday comedy "Better Together." NBC's new JJ series, "Undercovers" looked good in the pilot though I hear there may be come quality issues in subsequent episodes. "Raising Hope" on Fox is hilarious and I wish I could recommend the Will Arnet's new Fox comedy "Running Wilde" but the first version of the pilot, the one I saw, was not good, though they are re-doing it so maybe that will be better by airtime.  And absolutely, postively do not miss new "Hellcats" on CW which is maybe the most cheesetastic show of the new season. Here is the quick logline:   renegade cheerleader.

Q.

New shows

When can we expect the new shows to start popping up? Any favorites for the title of Fastest Off the Air?
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

CW's "Hellcats" debuts Sept. 8 which is maybe the first, unless you count some of the cable stuff. It's hard to know where the season really starts any more... First show yanked is a tough call this year. Based on the pilot I saw it should be Arnett's new show,  "Running Wilde." Sorry....

– August 27, 2010 1:08 PM
Q.

Hugh Laurie and Conan O'Brien

I'd really like both of them to win, both for their work (more Hugh Laurie on that one, but Conan was great in those last few weeks) but especially for the acceptance speeches! What are the chances? Hugh Laurie didn't get the Golden Globe, even with the great premiere episode of "House".
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

It's a shame Laurie has never won an Emmy because he is the best acceptance speech giver ever and this show sure could use some of that...I too am hoping Conan wins in the late night race on Sunday because his acceptance speech will be sure to be a doozie....

Live Emmys in all time zones

Hey, Pookie: Those of us who live on the west coast are very happy to finally be able to watch the Emmys live on Sunday night. Why do you think it's taken the Emmys so long to catch up to the Oscars with a live broadcast for all time zones?
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

I have no idea why the hidebound TV academy took so long to catch up. Oh wait, I think I just answered the question... It's happening this year out of desperation: the show had to be moved to August because it's airing on NBC and NBC has to air football games on Sunday in September. But this is also the last year of the Emmy contract with the broadcast networks so the academy wants the ratings to be as big as possible. They are actually going to air it TWICE on the West Coast -- live at 5 p.m. and rerun it at 8 for all those West Coasters who did not get the live-across-country memo.. that should help goose this year's numbers....

– August 27, 2010 1:12 PM
Q.

Hawaii 5-0?

I so want this show to be good. I'll watch the opening at least for the music. What about the rest?
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

Just keep thinking about that theme song. It carried me through the pilot. It kept playing over and over again in my head...I like this version but it bears little resemblance to the original; it's dark, and broody, and everyone is burdened with a terribly sad back-story. One the bright side, it makes you so surprised and happy when you hear Det. Steve McGarrett actually say "Book 'em, Danno!" at the end. I'm nearly as thrilled about that as I am about resurrecting the theme song...

– August 27, 2010 1:15 PM
Q.

Running Wilde

I have a little hope for the show because as awful as the Arnett/Russell duo are, I heard that one big change since the pilot you saw is more Peter Serafinowicz.
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

Arnett and Russell are two terrific actors -- they're just acting in different shows... it's weird...

– August 27, 2010 1:16 PM
Q.

I don't want Conan to win!

For starters, his show doesn't deserve to win ("Colbert Report" does). Lost amid the clusterlove NBC created was the fact that his "Tonight Show" was disappointing at best. Caveat, caveat, caveat: it didn't have the time to grow and develop and settle into a grove. But if you're awarding quality, I would give the award to something else. But you're right, it probably would be a good speech.

A.
Lisa de Moraes :

See, the difference between you and me is that you are basing your winners list on who deserves to win I'm all about who will entertain me the most.

– August 27, 2010 1:19 PM
Q.

Rockford Files

Lisa, what's the story with the new Rockford Files? Are they waiting for Castle or Human Target to be cancelled so Fillion or Valley can play Rockford?
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

NBC says they're still hopefully of getting it recast. Since Castle and Human Target are not going to be cancelled soon, can't we find anyone else who can take the lead? I actually think the problem with the first casting wasn't the actor, Dermot Mulroney, but the writing and directing.....

Glee and the Emmy's

I love Jane Lynch as much as any other Gleek, but I feel like the rest of the nominated actors in Glee are just as wonderful in their own ways. I'm still so upset that Mike O'Malley didn't win for his role, though at least that statue still went to NPH for Glee, and he was awesome too. My question is, aside from Jane Lynch, whom everyone seems to be predicting for the win, what do you think of Glee's chances in the other categories? I'd love to see Matthew Morrison knock the smug Alec Baldwin off his pedestal--it's gotten boring to see him win again and again. And who couldn't be won over by Kurt Hummel!?!?
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

Mike O'Malley is a clear case of Honor to Have Been Nominated.. Yes, he did not win for best guest actor in a comedy series but, honestly, let's not lose sight of the fact that it's Mike O'Malley and he actually got a nomination. Remember, this is the guy who starred in "Yes Dear" ..I'm still having nightmares about "Yes Dear."

– August 27, 2010 1:24 PM
Q.

Archie Panjabi

The actress that plays Kalinda, the investigator on The Good Wife, is the most striking and memorable supporting actress nominee. I presume that she had no chance of winning because Christine Baranski, a better known actress on the show, has also been nominated.

A.
Lisa de Moraes :

She is terrific in the show but I don't think Baranski is will win -- I think it's more likely to be Elizabeth Moss from "Mad Men"...sigh

– August 27, 2010 1:25 PM
Q.

Emmys

Where do they rank in the hierarchy of show biz awards? Below the Oscars and Tonys, but above the Golden Globes, People's Choice, and Razzies? How do you think Jimmy Fallon will perform as host on Sunday?
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

Definitely behind the Oscars and the Golden Globes, but definitely bigger crowd than the Tonys and those other's you mentioned. I think Jimmy Fallon will be just fine -- because he will neither interview anyone, nor be interviewed by anyone on Sunday's trophy show -- and those are his two big weaknesses. He's terrific on his own show except the interview bits

– August 27, 2010 1:28 PM
Q.

Emmys

I am going to tape the Emmys and watch True Blood and Mad Men. I can fast-forward through the Emmys in no time as I'm sure they will be mostly commercials. Also, why is Craig Ferguson overlooked every year as nominee and host?
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

If the broadcast networks renew their contract with the TV academy to broadcast the Emmy show, you can bet Ferguson will host when it's CBS's turn. They went with Neil Patrick Harris last time and it's Craig's turn next...

– August 27, 2010 1:29 PM
Q.

Rockford Files

That show was awesome because of James Garner, not because of the writing and directing. You just can't replace James Garner, certainly not with Dermott McDermott.
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

It was awesome because of Garner AND because of  the writing and directing. The remake just needs to bear little resemblance to the original  -- like Star Trek.  I adore Garner in the original but if you can replace William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, surely you can find a way to replace Garner.

– August 27, 2010 1:32 PM
Q.

Jim parsons

Love Jim Parsons. Does he have a chance to win?
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

Not a prayer: He's up against "30 Rock's" perennial winner Alec Baldwin, "The Office's" Steve "I'm Leaving the Show After This Season and Won't You Miss Me" Carell, "Glee's" Matthew Morrison, and Tony Shalhoub in his very last season on "Monk."

– August 27, 2010 1:35 PM
Q.

Re: Elizabeth Moss

She should win because she just got dumped by Chris Kattan.
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

WaPo TeamTV's Elizabeth Moss correspondent Emily Yahr informs me Ms. Moss was recently dumped by Fred Armisen, not Kattan -- Armisen who is now allegedly dating his 23-year-old SNL co-star Abby Elliott which is just cold. Anyway, I take your point. You think it would help heal Moss's broken heart. I'm all for sympathy voting, but sadly I don't think the news about her breakup happened in time to sway Emmy voters...

– August 27, 2010 1:38 PM
Q.

Re: Star Trek

Ugh, that Star Trek movie was not Star Trek. It was however the best Star Wars movie since Return of the Jedi.
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

Thank you for saying so because that was my take too...

– August 27, 2010 1:38 PM
Q.

Rockford FIles

The remake needs to bear little resemblance to the original. Then why do a remake?
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

Oh, that's easy, so you can use the theme song and have all those scripts at your disposal. Plus, all the people who saw the original will tune in to see if it's up to snuff...

– August 27, 2010 1:39 PM
Q.

What sets the Oscars apart

People remember who wins.
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

You answered your own question. Now let me put one to you:

which attracts more viewers -- a successful movie or a hit TV series

A hit TV series

Q.

Re: Star Trek

I didn't like the new Star Trek because nobody used The Force.
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

and yet, it was very successful at the boxoffice and the studio was very very happy...

– August 27, 2010 1:44 PM
Q.

Different Direction for Rockford

Josh Hollowell?
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

Do you mean Josh Holloway from "Lost" -- gak! Surely we can do better than that....

– August 27, 2010 1:45 PM
Q.

You Know what would close the circle?

A "Making of the Oscars" documentary every year. Then they could give it an Oscar for best doc, similar to the Emmys entering themselves. I'm dizzy now.
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

It's like chasing ones own tail, no?

– August 27, 2010 1:45 PM
Q.

Goose the Emmy Ratings

Is that why they're giving an Emmy to Clooney--star power+hot skanky girlfriend=ratings? Don't we all want to know if he's going to mention her while creating a Smug Alert with his speech?
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

Yes, that is exactly why the academy is  giving its humanitarion award during the broadcast. Except the hot girlfriend in speech part. He is not the kind of guy who would do something that stupid... and, at the risk of sounding pollyanna-ish, you may think he's smug but he convinces lots of big names to help raise money for a lot of worthy causes....

– August 27, 2010 1:47 PM
Q.

The new Rockford Files

Could they get Jim Garner to play Rocky ??
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

That would just be sad. He was given a lifetime achievement award by the TV Critics Association and was a no-show, BTW... I know we can cast this one, folks...

– August 27, 2010 1:48 PM
Q.

Handy dandy viewing guide

Lisa, can you provide us with a handy dandy viewers guide before the season starts? Especially highlighting new shows, and old favorites that may have moved.
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

will do! seriously. great idea...

– August 27, 2010 1:49 PM
Q.

Fashion at Emmys?

Will Robin Givhan be chatting with you to critique the fashions Sunday night?
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

another terrific idea. I will ask her if she will join me for the red carpet bits...

– August 27, 2010 1:50 PM
Q.

Rockford

Tom Selleck as Rockford, and James Garner in a Magnum, PI, remake.
A.
Lisa de Moraes :

Both frightening! Sorry for delay -tech issues... I'm going to bow out now while I can. ..See you Sunday..

– August 27, 2010 2:04 PM
