Q.

Justin Rude :

Fritz is braving the weather and has headed to the beach for the weekend, but the rest of us here aren't as adventurous. What are you doing for the last weekend of the summer?

Q.

Locks of Love

Hello, GOGs, I look forward to Thursday afternoons because of your lovely chats! I am planning on donating my hair to Locks of Love and wondering if you know of any salons that will offer a free haircut for this purpose. Thanks!
A.
Stephanie Merry :

Our girl Sarah Marston in the Style section did this recently, and her haircut wasn't free, but she got a good discount at Salon Roi in Woodley Park. Bonus: They also sent the hair off for her. Chatters, any other recommendations?

Q.

Class Reunion

Grad school reunion is coming up. Can you suggest a bar for a group of 40-somethings who haven't seen each other in 20 years? Prefer the Penn Quarter or Metro Center area. Thanks!
A.
Justin Rude :

Plenty of options, but it depends: What day are you looking at and how big a group are we talking?

Q.

Picnic

Gurus, With the perfect weather this weekend, where would be a great place for a family picnic. We have been to the National Mall, Mount Vernon, Great Falls, National Arboretum and Gravelly Point before and looking for some place close by.
A.
Stephanie Merry :

I hate to give away my spot, but here it is, just for you: I'm a big fan of the idyllic Montrose Park, which is next to Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown. There's usually parking (or you can bus there) and it's never too crowded so there's plenty of space for frisbee, bocce, croquet, etc.

Q.

NSO at the Capitol

We're planning on taking our our-of-town friends to the National Symphony Orchestra's concert on the Capitol's West Lawn on Sunday. Gates at 3:15, show's at 8. Any recommendation on when we should arrive? Also, is alcohol allowed?
A.
Alex Baldinger :

Well it certainly doesn't draw the same crowds as the Fourth of July concert does, and part of the reason the gates are so early is so you can catch dress rehearsal starting at 3:30. I would aim to get down there by 6 or 6:30 for the main event, depending on how much relaxation time you want. And as with all events of this type on the National Mall, no alcohol.

Q.

Have you yheard about the big Beatles Festival down at National Harbor this weekend?

It sounds like good fun, including lots of bands playing on several stages, Beatles memorabilia market, and other stuff. Just wondering if the Gurus have discussed this yet and if you have any tips? Sounds like a good Labor Day Weekend option if you don't want to get caught in the Hurricane "storm surge" at the beach. Here's more info: www.abbeyroadontheriver.com.
A.
Amy Orndorff :

I think it sounds so brilliant that I am taking my dad for his birthday! As for tips, take your kids! Everyone age 21 and younger (with a paying adult) gets in free and when I talked to the event planners they said that one of their favorite parts of the festival is seeing kids dancing with their parents.

The only other suggestion I have is to try to plan your schedule out in advance. There are so many fun-sounding events, that having a good battle plan will help you make sure you see everything.

Must have wings

Football season is finally here. I have made it my goal this season to sample the very best bar food DC has to offer, especially wings. Right now, I'm counting down the minutes until I get my first order of buffalo wings from Rhino during the first Penn State game. Gurus, is there anywhere in the district that can beat Rhino's wings?
A.
Justin Rude :

This is a popular answer, but one I have a hard time arguing with: Duffy's.

Q.

Labor Day Weekend

As a former DC-area resident, I used to scour this live chat every Thursday for fun things to do on the weekend. I've since moved away... but now I'm back for all of Labor Day weekend with my girlfriend. I've been gone so long I feel clueless! Looking for fun unique daytime-date things to do. We've done the museums and art galleries along the mall before. We'd love to do something outdoors since the weather is going to be so nice. Any thoughts?
A.
Stephanie Merry :

Welcome back! We've missed you. If you need ideas for the weekend, here are 20 promising ones. Personally, Beyoncepalooza has me excited, but if you want to be outside, then the Saint-Ex pig roast should be fun, as should the NSO's annual outdoor concert.

– September 02, 2010 1:13 PM
Q.

Cool Museums or Sites?

I've done all the major museums/sites here several times over. I want to check something out that's off the beaten track. Suggestions? I need it to be metro-accessible if outside the District.
A.
Amy Orndorff :

Have you seen the Big Chair? How about Frederick Douglass's house? Both are close to the Anacostia Metro station and I would definitely call them off the beaten track.

Q.

Leesburg - yay or nay?

Hi Gurus! I'm going to be attending a wedding in Leesburg later this Fall. A few of us are thinking of making a weekend of it and staying in the historic downtown area. Do you (or any of the chatters) know if there are some fun restaurants and bars to visit when we're done with rehearsal dinner obligations (on a Friday night) and maybe a place to keep the reception going late on a Saturday? Or any other fun places to visit while we're in town? Or is it going to be completely dead after 9pm? Thank you!!
A.
Justin Rude :

I was at a wedding in Leesburg earlier this year. For lunch you can get a decent bite of the Bayou at the Cajun Experience, which is right off the main drag downtown. There is some serious Italian at Palio. And I would try and hit Vintage 50 for some great house0brewed beer and an impressive wine list.

Q.

Virginia Scottish Games?

Family visiting this weekend and we have tickets for Jimmy Buffet of Saturday evening. Are the Virginia Scottish Games (nearby to the concernt locale) a good place to sepnd some time Saturday afternoon while waiting for the concert? Thanks for he advice.
A.
Alex Baldinger :

Yeah, the Virginia Scottish Games is a great idea: haggis, whiskey, bagpipers and athletic competitions featuring burly, kilted men and women hurling heavy objects. But for the Buffett show, we're talking about  Jiffy Lube Live here, which means you never know just how long it will take you to get into or out of the parking lot. Plus you've got the whole Margaritaville/Parrothead scene that may interest you once you get to JLL, so if I were you, I'd leave plenty of room in your day for transit. The Scottish games open at 9 so you should have plenty of time to do both.

clarendon shops

Hi, In your writeup of the Clarendon neighborhood a few weeks ago, you said that there were plenty of women's clothing stores, but I have to say I'm stumped! Apart from the four stores in Clarendon Market -- two for frumpy ladies and two for teens -- what shops are there in Clarendon? Thanks!
A.
Lavanya Ramanathan :

Not surprising, huh, that two dudes wrote it? It's not the mall at Pentagon City, but there are a few.  I'm sure they   meant ShoeFly (which isn't clothing, but has some pretty great shoes) and the side of the street directly across from that Crate and Barrel. There have always been a string of little boutiques there.

Q.

Date night dessert

Looking for a simple cheap-ish dinner with a focus on dessert for a date night tomorrow night. Would like to take a girl out, but having just returned from vacation, finances are not quite ideal. DC or Alexandria would be best, but willing to go anywhere.
A.
Justin Rude :

My go-to for dessert in DC is Co Co Sala, while in Alexandria you can't go wrong with the Majestic, and neither are bank-breaking.

Q.

Richmond, VA

Hello! Anything going on in the Fairfax Station/Lorton/Burke area this weekend? Ill be visiting with my in-laws. We like all sorts of events/activities. Thanks!
A.
Justin Rude :

Chuck Brown is playing at the Workhouse Arts center on Saturday as part of their Centennial Celebration. The whole thing starts at 1 with a brass quintet, includes a ton of open studios and ends with Chuck hitting the stage at 6.

Q.

Brunch Buffet

Hi! Are there any brunch buffets anywhere in DC on Saturday? Thanks!
A.
Alex Baldinger :

For just your standard weekend brunch buffet, the Front Page is a fine option. $20.95: Omelettes, Belgian waffles, carving station, yada yada. Any other brunch buffet faves out there, chatters?

– September 02, 2010 1:29 PM
Q.

Leesburg - yay or nay? (2.0)

Whee! You took my question, thank you! So one more quick one - are there bars open late in the downtown area? Don't need to be crazy awesome places, just somewhere where a group of post-reception friends can keep drinking.
A.
Justin Rude :

I have to admit that my bar experience in Leesburg doesn't extend much past a dismal and tiny hotel bar, but I know that at least one, Spanky's Shenanigans, is open till 2 a.m. We drove by it several times while heading to and from the wedding site and my car mates were unable to hold back their Super Troopers references.

Q.

Girls Night Out

Guru-ettes, if you were looking for a girls night out with 10 of your closest friends, where would you go? Late 20s-early 30s, looking to dress up and dance. We're thinking cocktails somewhere first and then a club, probably on a Saturday night. Not necessarily looking to do bottle service, but we wouldn't rule it out.
A.
Stephanie Merry :

I'd probably hit Russia House for some vodka cocktails followed by Eighteenth Street Lounge for dancing.

Wings

I love Hard Times wings!
A.
Justin Rude :

I knew wings would draw out some opinions from our chatters.

Q.

Mother and Son Time

My 10 and a half year old son and I will be spending the weekend alone. Half the time he's still a boy; the other half, an emerging teen. Any ideas for the weekend for just the two of us?
A.
Amy Orndorff :

What a cool mom! How about a trip to the Newseum (boys/emerging teens get in free through Labor Day) and then stay in the city for the National Symphony Orchestra concert? Or, if you are both Beatles fans, then I suggest checking out Abbey Road on the River (free for kids with paying adult). If he is a sports fan, how about seeing the DC United play Columbus Crew on Saturday or the Nationals on Monday? The Os are also at home and you can make an entire day out of exploring Baltimore.

Chatters, any other thoughts?

Q.

Jiffy Lube Live

Thanks for the advice on Scottish games and Jiffy Lube Live venue. Does a VIP Parking Pass for Jiffy Lube Live help at all with entering and exiting the parking area?
A.
Alex Baldinger :

VIP parking pass or not, you're still going to be stuck on the same two-lane access road as everybody else trying to funnel into the venue. If you can still get one, though, it might be worth it for exiting the parking lot, especially if you leave a song or two early. I've been to shows there where my time spent exiting the lot has been longer than the actual concert itself.

Q.

brunch buffet

best brunch buffet is at Levante's: $20 and they have cheap mimosas. 14K is good too!

A.
Alex Baldinger :

Another brunch buffet option from chatterland.

Moving to DC!

So I'm finally moving to your fine city after a grueling job search and will getting in on Sunday in time for dinner and some fun. My husband's been there for about 2 weeks so it'll be a nice little reunion too. Any ideas for food, drink, maybe a nice place to go for a walk as well to get reaquainted, celebrate my new employment, and welcome me to DC? We are flexible on location, but it might be nice to be around Columbia Heights, Adams Morgan, or Dupont as we are trying to move that way in a few months (we had to find a truly cheap place to live because I didn't have a job yet when he was moving).
A.
Lavanya Ramanathan :

Congrats, and welcome! You sound like you deserve a big day out together, and whenever that's what I'm looking for, I stick to 14th Street. Can I encourage you to get there a little earlier in the day?  You could check out the gallery Irvine Contemporary, and, since you have a new apartment to decorate, slip into some of the funky furniture spots (like Miss Pixie's and Ruff and Ready, not to mention Room and Board). Then, rest your feet with an appetizer and  beer  at  Churchkey; I love it there it the daytime, when the sun is still shining through the big windows. For dinner, you could walk up the street to Bar Pilar, where the food has really won us all over lately, or stop at  Estadio for some amazing small plates (but you must order slushitos, too). Then, keep walking to end the night at Marvin. Classic D.C. weekend, methinks. Check out our recent cover story with all the details you need to know about the neighborhood here.

Couples drinks/dinner date

My boyfriend, myself and another couple are starting Saturday evening with happy hour at Vinoteca. Are there any newer dining options you would recommend for afterwards? Or Labor Day activities of note in the neighborhoods? We've lived in the area for a few years, and are open to anything. Thanks!
A.
Justin Rude :

As far as Labor Day activities go, I could not be more excited about the pig roast at Saint Ex. Its earlier in the day (11-5), so it might be more of a lunch option. Post-Vinoteca I would head down to 14th and try out Estadio. Its still fresh, has a vibrant dining scene and just about perfect for a group of 4.

30th Birthday celebration

Hi there, My husband's 30th birthday is this weekend and we have several friends coming in town from Miami (we recently moved from there) to celebrate. We want to go to a lounge on Saturday night for lite apps and drinks (we were thinking Lotus Lounge?), then off to a club that plays good house music. We've had trouble finding any good places that can rival the Miami club scene. Can you recommend a club (preferably without the sobe attitude) that has great house/techno music and a crowd that likes to get down? Thanks so much:)
A.
Rhome Anderson :

Red Fridays at U Street Music Hall is doing big things for house in DC.  Some of the other house bookings around town can keep up on the strength of talent, but not U-Hall's sound system. The lone exception now would be Sweet Spot. They've also got the boom, but are a bit more upscale than U-Hall, which is all about coming as you are and dancing your brains out. Also, this Sunday one of my biggest all-time DJ heroes is playing the Sunday Soul Solution at Eighteenth Street Lounge. The legendary Kenny Dope will join Double o7 and resident Sam Burns. This is a pretty great weekend for house heads, and definitely no SoBe attitude involved.

Q.

Washington, DC

Hi GOGs...my wife and I have decided to stick around the area this long weekend instead of the Jersey Shore. HOw insane would it be to head to Annapolis for the day to walk around and have a bite to eat. Mayhem because it's Labor Day weekend?
A.
Rhome Anderson :

I think you can fit that in between the mass exodus and return times. Earl's probably reduced the size of that migration, but forecasts so far say that Annapolis should be spared any serious effects.

Why no Top Chef chat today?

The explanation offered by our Top Chef chat producer: "[spoiler withheld] wasn't available. Bummer."

Fun Labor Day Weekend Events

Gurus- My husband and I are staying in DC for the holiday weekend. What should we do? We don't have kids, are in our 30s, and like to have a good time without going crazy (i.e. no house music, no parties until 2am, etc). I'd like to do something outside, and maybe get a nice cocktail. Ideas?
A.
Lavanya Ramanathan :

Jazz in the Garden (ending Sept. 10) is outside, they sell sangria by the pitcher, and it's Metro-accessible -- which all adds up to it being one of the best ways to spend a Friday evening in the summer. The Page-to-Stage Festival at the Kennedy Center this weekend is really cool -- you get a peek at a lot of theater companies around here, and it's free. You could also try to squeeze onto the patio at Poste -- great cocktails -- before heading to Woolly Mammoth for "The Vibrator Play"? You'll be at home, in bed, long before 2 a.m., I swear.

Women's Clothing in Clarendon

For the chatter looking for clothing in Clarendon, Current Boutique is worth a look -- a great consignment shop
A.
Stephanie Merry :

Current is a great place to check out. I don't know if this is what the original poster was referring to when she mentioned teen stores, but South Moon Under and Free People have cute things sometimes too, although those spots can get a bit pricey.

Q.

Washington, DC

Does an adult men's beginner soccer league exist in DC? I've never played, and am looking for something with more exercise than my usual beer league softball team. I'm not anticipating being good, but I'm an avid fan of EPL and Seria A and figured this might be a fun way to workout. Any suggestions? Thanks! Forza Roma
A.
Rhome Anderson :

I've played in many adult soccer leagues in DC over the past 10 years. All of them have multiple divisions from novice to former D1 and semi-pro players and you end up running into folks at United matches and pickup games around town. It's a pretty consistent community. There are indoor leagues that play at the Alexandria and Rockville Sportsplexes as well as the DCJCC and Cardozo high school. Outdoor leagues play all over the city and 'burbs. My current one is run by SLeagues.com. Go to the site and drill down to the Washington area.

Area activities for the Grandparents!

Hello GoG's, if anyone has an idea for this, it would be you! Me: 20-something theatre artist living in the city Them: My grandparents who used to live in Fairfax The Problem: I was just informed that my grandparents are coming into town for the entire Labor Day Weekend, and with the last minute warning, I'm completely stumped as to what to do with them. Walking the mall and the classic museums are out - too much walking for my Grandfather who uses a cane. I've already scored tickets to the invited dress of All's Well at STC downtown Sunday. Where else can we go? Whats going on this weekend that's GP friendly? They are open minded, just limited in mobility. Thanks!
A.
Amy Orndorff :

I am going echo Lavanya's suggestion of Jazz in the Garden and the Kennedy Center's Page to Stage Festival. Catching an afternoon Nats game would work, too.

Q.

Chicken N Waffles

I consider myself a conoisseur of the stuff. I've had versions at Marvin(underwhelming), Creme (good), Church Key (decent), and Founding Farmers (bad). Where else in DC should a guy go to get his fix?
A.
Justin Rude :

Have you tried the chicken and waffles from Oohhs and Aahhs late-night menu?

Q.

Sports bar Columbia Heights

Just moved to Columbia Heights...what's the best/closest sports bar for football season?
A.
Alex Baldinger :

Is that you, roommates? I'm a new Columbia Heights resident myself, but the answer to me is simple: Meridian Pint. They've got both NFL Sunday Ticket and the College Gameday packages (they also show soccer if you're looking for that kind of football), and if you're lucky enough to snag one of the tap tables, you'll have six TVs to pick from.

FAQ

Has there ever been any thought to putting together a FAQ page for some of the more popular questions? For example, between your chat and Tom's the "where do I go for brunch" question has been beaten to death, exhumed, and beaten some more. It would be nice if there was a single page where people could go look stuff up that has already been well-covered. To that I would add "where do I go for a bachelorette party", and "where can I rent a space for a party".
A.
Lavanya Ramanathan :

Yeah, we do try to address some of these with Best Bets lists when we see the same questions over and over. In fact, we often talk about doing a bachelorette's best bets list, but sometimes the answer really depends on what time of year it is, or if something amazing is going on this weekend (like Beyoncepalooza!).

Also, if we gave you all the answers in advance, what on earth would we have to talk about here?

Leesburg Bar Hopping

There are a few bars in downtown leesburg Kings Court, The Saloon, etc. Some even have outdoor seating which should be awesome this weekend. All bars are open until 2pm--VA Law.
A.
Justin Rude :

Some advice on Leesburg bars. But are you sure there is a law about bars having to be open till 2 (I assume you mean am)? I know in VA they can't serve after 2...

Q.

last minute but please pickme!

I have to work both days this weekend (at least it will be cooler b/c the A/C will be off in my office). Any great places (in DC, NW, preferably) for breakfast or brunch on Monday morning? I want to have a little bit of a weekend. thanks!
A.
Justin Rude :

I admit to suggesting this one a lot, but I really like it: Ted's Bulletin. Breakfast all the time - and its good.

Things to do off the beaten path

What events are there in the DC region that are "off the beaten path" this weekend? If they're metro accessible that's even better!
A.
Lavanya Ramanathan :

The Writer's Center's Story/Stereo series is really brainy, and really cool. They pack the house pretty much everytime and this one will be really cool. Also, I second the Scottish Games festival! For all of you looking for Metro-accessible stuff, by the way, note that it's going to be messy this weekend thanks to closures.
