CUA nixes coed dorms

Since it's private, CUA can do what it pleases with it's dorm arrangements. Personally, I like the move. Do you or other readers know the reasons why college dorms went coed in the first place back in the 1980s? Was it strictly based on demands by the students or did administrators see it as conducive to higher learning? I'm not trying to be facetious.
