About the topic

Washington bars are likely nothing like your college bars back home. Drinks are more expensive. Generous tipping is expected. Some people swap business cards. And if you make a fool of yourself, the story might get leaked to Spotted: DC [Summer] Interns.

So get schooled in the ways of going out in the city. On Thursday, Dior Toney of McFadden's Bar and Grill will be online to answer all of your questions.

Campus Overload's Jenna Johnson chronicles national college news, drinking fads, admissions buzz and the latest exploits of interns on her blog each day. In her live chat, she answers your questions about life on campus -- and life off campus, too.
Q.

Jenna Johnson :

Happy Thursday, everyone! I hope that you had a great Fourth of July... I know I am still recovering from a marathon of backyard barbecues.

Today: Interns in bars!

Here to answer all of your questions and give you some advice is Dior Toney -- McFadden's Bar and Grill's minister of hospitality (and a George Washington University alumnus).

Let's get started!

Q.

Jenna Johnson :

Oh, and a question for you to answer: What's the dumbest thing you have seen an intern (or college student or 20-something) do in a bar that can be a lesson to everyone else? Or what's something really dumb you have done and wish you had not?

Q.

Mr. Minister -- Question from Jenna

Ummmm.... What is a "minister of hospitality"!?!
A.
Dior Toney :

Pretty much I set a safe and fun environment for everybody. I make sure that everyone leaves McFadden's with a great story and a fantastic memory of the place. I interact with everyone, buy shots and make them feel at home. I also bring the WOW factor

Q.

Fav bars -- Question from Jenna

Where do you hang out when you're not at McFaddens?
A.
Dior Toney :

I'm always at McFadden's I basically live here. When I'm not here I'm chilling with friends but this is where I feel the most comfortable having fun. I was even here last night drinking with some interns.

Tipping -- Question from Jenna

What's the rule for tipping in DC bars? And do the rules change if you are paying cash for one beer or running up a tab on a card during the night?
A.
Dior Toney :

The norm is 20% but it's def at your own discretion. It’s true that if you tip more you get notice because the bartenders work off of tips alone. A lot of people think bartenders get paid with a paycheck too but that’s not true anymore.

Q.

D.C. at night

D.C. is so expensive! What are some tips for going out, having a great time and keeping (relatively) on budget?
A.
Jenna Johnson :

Yes, yes, yes... It's so easy to drop a lot of money on just a couple of beers in this city...

During the week, happy hour specials are your friend, so plan your night around what's cheapest. The Post's Going Out Guide just did a list of the best happy hours for interns.

On the weekends, it's difficult to find specials. My advice: Stick with light beer. It's usually the cheapest thing on the menu, even at nice places.

Oh, and don't get sloshed. It's always good to remember the next morning how much you charged to your credit card!

Q.

Cheap booze

As a former GW student, I've definitely frequented McFaddens, and I'm super curious. How can the bar make money from those happy hours?! What is the catch?! Free/$2 drinks, how do you do it!
A.
Dior Toney :

The happy hours get you here and my job is to keep you in the building. If you feel like you can't leave because you're having such a good time then you will stay all night. Yeaaah

Q.

college

Are u taking Campus questions today?
A.
Jenna Johnson :

Yes, yes! Ask away....

– July 07, 2011 1:16 PM
Q.

Yum...

What are your top drink picks, Mr. Minister? :)
A.
Dior Toney :

I drink whatever; I don't discriminate

– July 07, 2011 1:18 PM
Q.

Intern drinks

What drinks are associated with interns? And what should I drink if I'm NOT an intern? I live and work in D.C. and would like my drink choices to stand out from the intern masses. -Becky
A.
Dior Toney :

Interns get mostly domestic drafts and rail specials. We like to give our interns more options and on Tuesdays have $1 cans and $5 Redbull Bombs. Thursdays we have all our drafts for $3 so if you are looking to class it up a bit order something fancy. Check out all our specials: http://www.mcfaddensdc.com/specials.php

Q.

Something dumb I've done in bars with co-workers

Get wasted. Even though everyone else was, it was still a bad idea and gave me something of a reputation I am STILL working down x years later. A few drinks maybe, but seriously, do yourselves a favor and save the real partying for your friends. --been there done that
A.
Jenna Johnson :

Yikes.... On that note, here are five rules for avoiding happy hour embarrassments. (Rule No. 1 = "Stick to one, maybe two, drinks so you won't embarrass yourself.")

– July 07, 2011 1:23 PM
Q.

Music -- Question from Jenna

What's the most requested song at McFaddens this summer?
A.
Dior Toney :

McFadden's National Anthem is Livin on a Prayer so that plays at least once a night and we make everyone take off their hats and raise their drinks. Now you know.

– July 07, 2011 1:24 PM
Q.

Under 21

I am underage. How do I partake in the bar scene? No really, I want to know.
A.
Jenna Johnson :

There are some bars (and concert venues) that will allow people under 21, so call around to see where you can hang out.

– July 07, 2011 1:26 PM
Q.

Intern Honest Mistake

The funniest thing I ever saw an intern do: An intern once honestly commented that "isn't it ironic that Lou Gehrig would die of the disease named after him?:" I at first thought he was telling a joke, but he actually had thought that Lou Gehrig had done fund raising for a disease named after him, and then died of that disease.
A.
Jenna Johnson :

hahahaha! Wow.

– July 07, 2011 1:27 PM
Q.

Thirsty Turtle

Can you live up to a legend?
A.
Dior Toney :

It's like apple and oranges. They do their thing and we do ours. If we were closer to each other maybe it would be a different story but then again we would win hands down.

– July 07, 2011 1:29 PM
Q.

Jenna Johnson :

Where are interns hanging out this summer? And what are the best happy hour specials you've found?

Q.

Ryan Kellett :

This American Life did a piece on the guy who entertains on behalf of Jose Cuervo. Are you the equivalent in DC? How do you juggle the entertainment of guests?

A.
Dior Toney :

I’m always energetic and I never stop moving so I’m always down to have fun. I’m just blessed with a job that fits my personality. I’ve been offered jobs in Vegas to do the same thing at clubs but I love McFadden’s and would never leave. I grew up here ha

– July 07, 2011 1:34 PM
Q.

Where does the intern go out?

This is my first summer in the city (and no, I'm not an intern) and I'm wondering which neighborhoods tend to get swamped with the youngsters after hours. So as to avoid them.
A.
Jenna Johnson :

ha! In that case, stay far far away from 18th Street in Adams Morgan. Especially at about 2 a.m. when the bars close and loooong lines form for jumbo slice.

Some other usual intern hangouts: On the Hill, Union Pub or Hawk 'n' Dove. In Dupont, Lucky Bar or The Front Page. On H Street, Rock and Roll Hotel. (What did I miss?)

Q.

Hot seated items in a bar

There used to be a restaurant in New York where one could order a birthday spanking for $25 from the server of one's choice. We jokingly told an intern it was part of intern initation, and before we realized that the intern didn't realize we were joking....

A.
Jenna Johnson :

haha! Awkward.

– July 07, 2011 1:37 PM
Q.

Dior Toney :

We want to know what you all love to drink and want in a bar?

Q.

great performance art concept

How far do u go with the interaction? Say, would u plank? The first thing that came to mind is Tom Green style comedy. On youtube, he has a brilliant take on Canterbury Tales.... may be fun to try a version.
A.
Dior Toney :

I love Tom Green. I'm an idiot also. I'll do whatever it takes to make sure people have a blast. I dance to the YMCA in my boxers sometimes and dance with my shirt off and pretend to be Wiz Khalifa.

– July 07, 2011 1:42 PM
Q.

Drinks

Dark and stormy.
A.
Jenna Johnson :

My fav is a vodka soda. (I fully realize it's an old lady drink and don't care.)

– July 07, 2011 1:46 PM
Q.

No friends -- Question from Jenna

Let's say an intern moved here for the summer and still doesn't have any friends. Is it okay to show up at a bar alone? Any tips for making friends without being awkward?
A.
Dior Toney :

It's def cool to show up alone. The best way is to come early and make friends with the bartenders that way you won't feel as awkward. You already know someone and you can party with us. We drink just as much as everyone else.

– July 07, 2011 1:46 PM
Q.

Splitting tab -- Question from Jenna

Here's the scene at many of my happy hours: The check arrives, people plunk down cash and we are usually always short. Then the same people usually end up chipping in more. Any tips for avoiding this?
A.
Dior Toney :

The easiest way to avoid this is to have separate tabs. It doesn’t bother us if you tell us at the start but it makes it worse when you’re trying to close out and we have a million other people we are trying to serve.

– July 07, 2011 1:49 PM
Q.

Bartending -- Question from Jenna

Any advice for college students wanting to break into bartending? Or ministering hospitality?
A.
Dior Toney :

Everyone told me to start as a barback. Just like in any job you have to work from the bottom up. Earn your keep.

– July 07, 2011 1:50 PM
Q.

Wow.

I'm 42 and I think I wandered into the wrong chat. Boy, I do not miss being in my early 20s. ;)
A.
Dior Toney :

Hey we party with everyone, we don't care about age. Age is nothing but a number. Come in Friday or Saturday and we will take shots on me!

– July 07, 2011 1:51 PM
Q.

Dior Toney :

If you want to know more about McFadden's you can follow me on twitter @diorhomme13 or the bar @McFaddensDC

We are also having our Intern Takeover Finale on August 4th we are giving away a SOCO machine.

Thanks for everything and don't forget that if you see me in the bar, come ask for shots. I'll never turn you down!

Q.

Jenna Johnson :

Great questions! And thanks to everyone who shared embarrassing intern stories... And, Dior, you rock.

Next week we are going to chat about cooking on the cheap -- either just for yourself or for a huge group house of poor, hungry interns. (Do you have a good recipe? Email it to me, johnsonj@washpost.com)

And if you have a burning question about college or internships that just can't wait for next week, post it on my Facebook wall.

Have a great weekend! Cheers.

Hey we party with everyone, we don't care about age. Age is nothing but a number. Come in Friday or Saturday and we will take shots on me!

OP here. You are very right about age being nothing but a number, and thanks for the invite. :) So, here's my piece of advice for interns at bars: alternate between alcoholic drinks and water. You'll cut your drinking down and be less likely to get sloshed and do something embarrassing.
A.
Jenna Johnson :

YES! And don't hesitate to order a club soda... it looks just like a mixed drink...
